'08 Playoffs Roundup: The Story

The bad news is that the Empty Pitchers will have to wait until next year to have a chance at wearing the league crown, after being blanked by the K.V. Kings, 7-0, last weekend.

It was a rough start for David, who elected to stay in his "Halloween Hangover"/"David Wells" costume for the duration of the softball contest, taking his first loss on the season in the process. Not that he was alone, with his Pitchers teammates offering up a few timely errors and a dormant offense, a combination that was no match for the Latin cowbell-clanging Kings. The lone bright spot in the game came courtesy of Rachel, aka "Mrs. November," who went 3-for-3 and provided a calming presence behind the plate.

A week earlier, the Pitchers found a way to a better outcome, taking their second-round playoff game against the Hurricanes, 5-4. (As the No. 1 seed in the league, the Pitchers had a bye in the first round). Greg went 3-for-4, and Damian and Felix both had a pair of hits in the win, though, as previously mentioned, Kristine got the MVP award by showing up to the field in time for a 12:07 p.m. start.

The Pitchers didn't push a run across the plate until the fourth, when David and Alicia both got on board and were moved around the pond by singles from Alex, Abbey and Felix. Later, with both teams tied at 2 heading into the seventh, the Pitchers were able to scrap for another three runs, thanks to timely hits by Damian, Greg and Alicia. The Pitchers would need all of that cushion to hold off the hard-hitting Hurricanes in the home half of the inning.

Even in the midst of the playoff bounce, the Pitchers might still have another way to grasp a brass ring for the fall 2008 season -- with a record of 8-2 in non-playoff action, the team still has a shot at winning the regular season crown should they take both games next weekend from that same Hurricanes team.

Playoff hopes last seen alive. 11.01.2008. 9:54 a.m.

Next game: It's the season-ending doubleheader, Saturday, Nov. 8 at 2:30 p.m. against the Hurricanes. Plan on taking another team picture, and taking a trip to Jeremy's Ale House for season-ending Styrofoam Beers. CANCELED due to mathematical elimination from pennant race.

Getting Back into the Groove

With only a couple of rained-out regular season games left to go, the Empty Pitchers are holding on to a tie for first place with the NY Dirt Dogs, whom they split a doubleheader against in the first weekend of the regular season:

         1. Empty Pitchers (8-2)
         2. NY Dirt Dogs (8-2)
         3. Ruben’s Angels (7-1)
         4. Hot Cousins (7-5)
         5. Phantoms (6-2)
         6. K.V. Kings (6-4)
         7. Averages (6-4)
         8. Remainders (6-4)
         9. Hurricanes (3-7)
       10. Sub & Heroes (3-9)
       11. Jeff's Team (Gave up)
       12. Honey Nut Ichiros (DOA)

The Pitchers will have a better idea of exactly where they stand after Nov. 2, when a slate of rained-out Saturday games from earlier in the season are played, and Ruben's Angels -- the league's perennial front runner -- gets a chance to catch up.

The weekend of October 18, the Pitchers split two against the Avengers. The early game was a brutal one, with the Pitchers falling behind early and often, eventually losing 17-9 (and that with having scored a face-saving four runs in the home half of the seventh). The game wasn't without some positives though, Nicole boosted her average in a big way, going 3-for-4, and scoring two runs. Greg, Alex, Alicia, Matt and Damian also had multiple hit games, and Alicia posted 3 RBIs on the day. David even threw pitching nemesis Raul a run-support bone, going 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.

In the second game, a 6-3 Pitchers win, the hits were fewer and further in between for both teams. With the score scoreless heading into the top of the third, Alex was able to get things going with a double, eventually crossing the plate on a single by Alicia. The Pitchers tacked on another run in the fifth, with a triple from Greg, and an RBI single courtesy of Kristine. The Pitchers were able to give themselves a four-run cushion in the sixth inning to seal the win. Undefeated Pitchers pitcher David again led the way, helping him help himself, and posting a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the lead-off slot.

Jeff's Team Overpowered by Pitchers

The Empty Pitchers continued their march to the playoffs, posting another two wins on the season Saturday against Jeff's Team (in previous incarnations, also called the Screaming Yaks, Scared Hitless, Mr. Muscles).

The Pitchers won the first game by a score of 9-5, scoring their runs in bunches during the fourth and fifth innings. Greg continued his assault on opposing team's right-side defenses, going 3-for-3 and falling just a single short of hitting for the cycle. The home run was actually an eGREGiousTM grand slam, that brought Greg's RBI total for the game to 6 (though in all fairness, Greg would mix it up in the second game, ripping a hit into an empty left field). Matt had three hits in the early game, and power couple Kristine and Jason (both 2-for-3) got the job done at the top of the order, getting on early and often.

With Jeff's Team visibly disheartened, and Jeff's Beard failing to give him the warmth that his sleeveless shirt so deprived him of, the Pitchers easily took the second game by a score of 8-1. David Being David showed up to pitch the second game, blanking Jeff's Team for six innings, and driving in 5 runs in support of his own cause. The Pitchers also showed some spectacular defense in the game, with Jason laying out to stab a grounder as part of a non-doctor-approved putout to first, Greg showing off some solid scoops in the infield, and Nicole tagging out a runner at home at the tail end of an 8-3-2 double play.

With the batting title race heating up, the Pitchers continued to step their individual games up. Abbey, the fastest girl on the team, reached base twice in the second game, as did Nicole, now in official possession of a batting average. And Raul turned a deaf ear to David's mano-a-mano pitcher trash talk, completing an amazing 6-for-6 day, and raising his average to .550. Or, as some might note, .050 above David's .500 average.

With the Pitchers on another roll, the job now is to remain vigilant that they don't repeat last season's second-half nosedive.

Next game: Saturday, Oct. 18, at 2:30 p.m. against the Avengers.

Everybody Hits (Or Walks Multiple Times)

A week after suffering a 9:30 a.m. rain out, the Empty Pitchers returned to play, taking two games from the Sub & Heroes.

In the early game, the Pitchers scored early and often, batting around in the first inning to take a 7-0 lead over the Hero-less Heroes. Greg and Matt padded their averages, going a perfect 3-for-3 in the early game, while Jess got the dirty work done on the base paths, trekking through the mud to score three times as the Pitchers went on to win 15-3.

In the second game, the Heroes managed to hang tough through four innings, keeping the game within a single run. Then, with two runners on in the fifth, Greg hit a bases-clearing triple. An inning later, he would kill the dreams of the Heroes dead, with an inside-the-park grand slam -- bringing his RBI total for the game to 8, in a game the Pitchers would win 13-3.

Not lost in Greg's Feats of Coed Softball was Brian's 4-for-4 at the plate, Raul going 3-4 at the top of the order, and Damian taking an admirable turn in the pitching rotation. And freed from the shackles of catcher-dom, Murph closed the game out with three nifty plays at third, including a nice heads-up, force-out courtesy of Brian's throw from center.

Next game (Updated!): Saturday, Oct. 11, at 2:30 p.m. According to the league schedule, the Pitchers take on the intriguingly-named "Jeff Team."

Remainders Remain Ramshackle As Ever

The Empty Pitchers took two from the Remainders on another beautiful Sunday afternoon.

In the early game, the Pitchers shook off their offensive doldrums in the third inning, scoring 9 runs, and going on to win 12-3. The stars included a still-gimpy Jason (3-for-3, 3 RBIs, run scored), Brian (3-3, 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored), and Raul, who was able to pitch his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth. And making her fall season debut, Julie also contributed some fine glove work at second.

The Pitchers took the second game, 8-4, in a workmanlike win over a Remainders team that had insisted on playing by the [2006-07] Rules late in Game 1. But no matter. After giving up three runs in the first inning (which saw an unconscionable Pigpen-takeout of Julie at the plate), the Pitchers wasted no time in retaliating, taking the lead back for good in the top of the second inning.

Pitcher David found some hustle in his heart, making the “L” in LBD stand for “Lightening” on the base paths. David went 3-for-3 in supporting his own cause, culminating in the legging-out of an inside-the-park home run to end the game’s scoring. Kristine contributed a pair of hits in the win, rookie Abbey (who worked two walks in the first game) collected her first hit on the season, and Alex had the momentum-changer, a two-out double that scored two runs in the second.

Next game: It's the early one. The Empty Pitchers take on 'Wei's Team,' Sunday, Sept. 28 at 9:30 a.m.

Right Back Where We Started From

The Empty Pitchers returned to the Coleman Oval on a muggy Sunday, splitting the first doubleheader of the season against the rather unimaginatively-named New York Dirt Dogs. By virtue of having one less loss, the Dirt Dogs finished just ahead of the Pitchers during the 2007 regular season.

Speaking of which, the Pitchers picked up right back where they left off last season, dropping the first game via the Mercy Rule, 14-2. After giving up 8 unearned runs in the top of the first, the Pitchers were able to get back a couple of runs in the bottom of the inning. Rookie Felix drove in Damian, and Nicole returning to her Summer of '06 form, drawing a walk to push Matt across the plate. Offensive highlights were few and far between from there, as the Pitchers were held to only six hits.

On the bright side, the team did hang in for another five innings, taking advantage of the opportunity to socialize a bit, learn one another's names, figure out who the Craigslisters were, and, all the while, avoid repeating the defensive foibles of the first.

In the second game, the Pitchers pulled it together, triumphing 3-2 in a non-beer-related pitchers' duel. The Pitchers had what passed for a big offensive inning in the third, scoring all three of their runs and as they continued to shake the rust off their collective bats. The first three batters of that inning -- David, Damian and Brian -- all reached base, with Rachel, Alicia and Greg each delivering solid swings to drive runners in. Matt also began the defense of his 2007 team batting crown, going an intimidating 3-for-3 on the day.

As dusk closed in on the corner of Market and Monroe streets, the Pitchers had to hold on to the lead to get the win, blanking the Dirt Dogs over the final five innings. Brian had a key put-out in the bottom of the fourth, gunning down a runner at second from the outfield; bum leg and all, Jason showed no qualms about dirtying his brand-new shirt; and David pitched a strong game with some nice defensive stops of his own to seal the win for the Pitchers.

Next game: Sunday, Sept. 21. The Empty Pitchers take on the Remainders at the Coleman Oval. Plan to be at the field by 2:15 p.m.

(A Couple of Months Later) Closure

Just when you thought Coach Korndog had ceased finding ways to squander her time, I've decided to put a final end cap on the Empty Pitchers' inaugural season.

Wins proved elusive after the Pitchers ran the table in their first seven contests, but the team finished with a respectable 7-5 record, good for a middle-of-the-pack finish in the 10-team league:

     1 - Ruben's Angels (14-0)
     2 - Phantoms (9-5)
     3 - The Honey Nut Ichiros (8-6)
     4 - NY Dirt Dogs (7-4)
     5 - Empty Pitchers (7-5)
     6 - Sub & Heroes (6-7)
     7 - Hot Cousins (5-6)
     8 - OMD (4-7)
     9 - Arup Green (2-10)
   10 - Remainders (2-11)

The Pitchers can take some pride in at least having given the Angels juggernaut a challenge in Week 6 -- the undefeated team also won the Fall 2007 Championship crown in the single-elimination playoffs.

Congrats to Matt for winning the Pitchers batting title with a .692 average (9-for-16), and to Greg for leading the team in doubles (3, along with Jon), triples (2) and Manly Man Over-the-Fence Outs (3, along with Pat). Greg and David tied for total hits on the season, with 14 each.

Here's to everyone enjoying the off-season. Rest assured that an autumnal return to the Coleman Oval is but seven short months away...
