Jeff's Team Overpowered by Pitchers

The Empty Pitchers continued their march to the playoffs, posting another two wins on the season Saturday against Jeff's Team (in previous incarnations, also called the Screaming Yaks, Scared Hitless, Mr. Muscles).

The Pitchers won the first game by a score of 9-5, scoring their runs in bunches during the fourth and fifth innings. Greg continued his assault on opposing team's right-side defenses, going 3-for-3 and falling just a single short of hitting for the cycle. The home run was actually an eGREGiousTM grand slam, that brought Greg's RBI total for the game to 6 (though in all fairness, Greg would mix it up in the second game, ripping a hit into an empty left field). Matt had three hits in the early game, and power couple Kristine and Jason (both 2-for-3) got the job done at the top of the order, getting on early and often.

With Jeff's Team visibly disheartened, and Jeff's Beard failing to give him the warmth that his sleeveless shirt so deprived him of, the Pitchers easily took the second game by a score of 8-1. David Being David showed up to pitch the second game, blanking Jeff's Team for six innings, and driving in 5 runs in support of his own cause. The Pitchers also showed some spectacular defense in the game, with Jason laying out to stab a grounder as part of a non-doctor-approved putout to first, Greg showing off some solid scoops in the infield, and Nicole tagging out a runner at home at the tail end of an 8-3-2 double play.

With the batting title race heating up, the Pitchers continued to step their individual games up. Abbey, the fastest girl on the team, reached base twice in the second game, as did Nicole, now in official possession of a batting average. And Raul turned a deaf ear to David's mano-a-mano pitcher trash talk, completing an amazing 6-for-6 day, and raising his average to .550. Or, as some might note, .050 above David's .500 average.

With the Pitchers on another roll, the job now is to remain vigilant that they don't repeat last season's second-half nosedive.

Next game: Saturday, Oct. 18, at 2:30 p.m. against the Avengers.
