2013 Wrap Up: Playoff Recap
As we near the first anniversary of the closest the Empty Pitchers have ever come to being a part of the playoff finals, the book's stats will have to tell the tale of the Pitchers destroying TAP in Round 1, rolling to an 11-1 win over the higher seed, and then engaging Ruben's Angels in an epic Round 2 battle, before falling 5-4 in extra innings. All that aside, to Koach K, the day still remains most memorable as the closest she's ever come to starting a fistfight, following her offer of common-sense advice (e.g. take a chill pill) to a crazy-eyed Sub & Heroes banshee regarding the controversial finish of the preceding playoff game.

2011 Playoffs: One and Done
Apparently unable to shake off the funk that comes with a one-and-done playoff run and bring myself to author a pithy post last fall, I'm now forced to relive the pain of last season's playoff outing in updating the blog for the start of the fall 2012 season.
After eeking into the playoffs as the 6th seed, the Empty Pitchers appear to have had a short but wild ride in the Commish's new format, falling to the hated Dirt Dogs by the score of 6-4 in the first round. I've erased most memories of this game from my mind, so will instead let the scorebook's stats tell the tale...

To Be the Man, You Have to Beat the Man
And on Saturday, the Empty Pitchers lost to him.
The Pitchers were bounced in the third round of the playoffs for a fourth consecutive year, losing a 7-4 match to Ruben's Angels. If nothing else, the Pitchers present on that fateful day should find solace in knowing they at least played a well-contested game on a beautiful, unseasonably warm day.
The visiting Angels - who won the fall-season pennant race from 2007-09, back-to-back league championships in '07 and '08, and fell just short in the finals a year ago - jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first, quickly posting 2 runs on a number of hard-hit balls. With no outs, the Pitchers looked karma straight in the face, and capitalized on Angels' base-running blunders, picking off two runners trying for extra bases in a single play and thankfully managing to get out of the inning a batter later, before the game got away.
The Pitchers would load the bases in the bottom of the first, and Sam would nearly kill himself attempting to score from second in the bottom of the second, but the team was unable to break through and score their first run until the third inning, at which point they found themselves jn a 6-1 hole. After blanking the Angels in the fifth and sixth, the Pitchers were down just two runs entering the seventh, but unable to muster a rally.
They've carried the team all season, and Greg and Alex didn't disappoint with the pressure on. Greg held his ground on the mound, and helped his cause with a team-leading 4-for-4 day at the plate. Alex also stayed in stellar batting form, contributing three hits.
The Pitchers certainly had their offensive chances (besides leaving the bases loaded in the first, they also left them loaded in the fourth and fifth), and stranded an unseemly 15 ducks on base over the course of the game. Don't get too down though, we'll get 'em next season.
Next game: The games don't count, but the stats do. We'll play the NY Dirt Dogs again on Saturday, at 2 p.m.

Pitchers Mostly Business in Early Rounds
The Pitchers are through the opening rounds of the playoffs and looking ahead to a third-round matchup against Ruben's Angels, and, a potential championship matchup against the winner of Sub & Heroes versus the Dragons.
A well-balanced offensive attack from the Pitchers in Round 1 resulted in an easy 7-2 win over the Remainders. Much to the consternation of their opponent's tight-jeans bedecked, hipster pitcher, the Pitchers showed incredible discipline at the plate, refusing to chase any garbage he tossed their way.
From top-to-bottom of the lineup, every Pitcher reached base and the run scoring was scattered throughout the order. After banking two runs in the first, the Pitchers broke the game open with a four-run second, featuring hits from Sam, Lisa, Matt, John, Alicia and Greg. In fact, two-out hits were the source of all the Pitchers' run production over the course of Game 1.
Greg pitched outstanding in his second career start, walking none, going above and beyond in taking the ball through the early innings of Round 2, proving himself as clutch a big-game Pitcher as ever.
Round 2 saw the Pitchers take a 4-1 win from Fontana's Bar. Late-arrival/malcontent David took the mound in the third inning of the game -- promptly messing with management's head by walking the first batter he faced (a girl! who would go on to score Fontana's only run!) -- but soon put aside any discord over last weekend's post-game spread to focus on extending his personal-best unbeaten pitching streak. Luckily, David Being David resulted in another W for the Pitchers.
In spite of all the pre-game scouting on the part of Fontana's, the bar team didn't have any answer to perfect offensive AND defensive games from the left side of the infield: John (4-4, run scored) and Alex (3-for-3, RBI). The Pitchers scored all of their runs in the third -- on hits from John, Alicia, Greg, Alex and Stacey -- and held on tight defensively to secure the win.
Next game: Be at the field for 11:15 a.m. this Saturday. If we win, we've got a break and then play again in the 2:30 p.m. championship. Either way, plan on Jeremy's afterward...

'08 Playoffs Roundup: The Story
The bad news is that the Empty Pitchers will have to wait until next year to have a chance at wearing the league crown, after being blanked by the K.V. Kings, 7-0, last weekend.
It was a rough start for David, who elected to stay in his "Halloween Hangover"/"David Wells" costume for the duration of the softball contest, taking his first loss on the season in the process. Not that he was alone, with his Pitchers teammates offering up a few timely errors and a dormant offense, a combination that was no match for theLatin cowbell-clanging Kings. The lone bright spot in the game came courtesy of Rachel, aka "Mrs. November," who went 3-for-3 and provided a calming presence behind the plate.
A week earlier, the Pitchers found a way to a better outcome, taking their second-round playoff game against the Hurricanes, 5-4. (As the No. 1 seed in the league, the Pitchers had a bye in the first round). Greg went 3-for-4, and Damian and Felix both had a pair of hits in the win, though, as previously mentioned, Kristine got the MVP award by showing up to the field in time for a 12:07 p.m. start.
The Pitchers didn't push a run across the plate until the fourth, when David and Alicia both got on board and were moved around the pond by singles from Alex, Abbey and Felix. Later, with both teams tied at 2 heading into the seventh, the Pitchers were able to scrap for another three runs, thanks to timely hits by Damian, Greg and Alicia. The Pitchers would need all of that cushion to hold off the hard-hitting Hurricanes in the home half of the inning.
Even in the midst of the playoff bounce, the Pitchers might still have another way to grasp a brass ring for the fall 2008 season -- with a record of 8-2 in non-playoff action, the team still has a shot at winning the regular season crown should they take both games next weekend from that same Hurricanes team.

Playoff hopes last seen alive. 11.01.2008. 9:54 a.m.
Next game: It's the season-ending doubleheader, Saturday, Nov. 8 at 2:30 p.m. against the Hurricanes. Plan on taking another team picture, and taking a trip to Jeremy's Ale House for season-ending Styrofoam Beers. CANCELED due to mathematical elimination from pennant race.

Chill Settles on Pitchers' Playoff Bats
Well, the good news is that we won't have to play that 9:30 a.m. game next week.
The Empty Pitchers fell behind the hated Hot Cousins early, and were never able to come back, getting knocked out of the playoffs in a 4-1 loss. Perhaps most painful is knowing that the Cousins scored all of those runs with two outs.
David did get the job done at the top of the order, going 3-for-4 on the day, Pat had a couple of hits, and Greg had a triple in the fifth inning (eventually scoring the Pitchers' lone run on a hit by Adam), but other than that, there was little to report offensively. The Pitchers' bats were frigid on the first truly autumnal-feeling day of the fall.
The team mustered a bit of a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, putting a couple of runners on, but it was too little, too late. With luck, the two remaining doubleheaders will get the team back on track, as well as dim the feelings of devastation Coach Korney has carried with her these past few days ... maybe somewhere therein lies the true reason the Commish schedules the playoffs in the midst of the regular season.
